"Octopus Floating" is a 48×36” original painting on canvas.

A strength of this painting is the simplicity. A single octopus, floating in an inky blue ocean, top-lit by a beam of sunshine, and a single patch of reflection on the water’s surface.

If you like blue and gold and pearlescent shimmer, this one’s for you.

"Fireflies" is a 48×48” painting that celebrates the night. Joy is felt as the fireflies light up the trees. Gold ones, blue ones, green ones. If you’ve never caught a few in a jar, and watched them breathing, their bellies glowing lime green, well you should treat yourself.

One hangs onto a stalk of grass. Another fans the night with orange, lit-up wings.

Nature’s magic is a thing called bioluminescence. When certain chemicals are mixed, and oxygen added, the resulting brew glows. Fireflies control the pulsing glows, by adding oxygen when desired. Bioluminescence is also found in jellyfish, sharks, fungi, squids.

An original oil, acrylic and pearlescent painting; varnished, on stretched canvas, 48×48”, wired and ready to hang.  Unframed.

"WW2 Wreck Dive" is a 24”x30” painting on canvas, in acrylic, pearl and oil paint. This painting is of an octopus floating by a jellyfish, with a WW2 wreck in the background.

The painting started as a simple wash of background color. I left a white “hole” at the top to create a feeling of the sun streaming in. Towards the bottom I made it dark, to push back the plane. Painting the plane was a challenge; to get across that feeling of the deep sea requires that the colors be exactly right, and that is the right shade of blue-green, and the right way that ocean water pushes colors to gray in the distance.

The jellyfish was also a long time in getting it right; they are so ephemeral, translucent, iridescent; they require patience, and patience slows things down. But going at it slowly in many layers of washes can make things muddy and unpleasant. That’s where the pearlescent paint helps.

Finding remains of a plane is such a rare poignant encounter, when scuba diving. Someone was in that plane, and you don’t know if they parachuted out, or not. It’s makes you realize how things that at one time actually dominated the world are now rusted relics, that nature has repurposed as reef builders. Fish love them, it gives them something to hide in. And corals generate around them, if it’s not too deep down in the dark.

This is a mid-sized picture that has a subtle draw to it, if you are inclined to like ocean creatures , and undersea light in all its streaming glory.

An original oil, acrylic and pearlescent painting; varnished, on stretched canvas, 24”x30”, wired and ready to hang.  Unframed.

"Deep Winter Snow Birches"

"Deep Winter Snow Birches"

…  is an original painting on canvas of 2 birch trees, draped in snow, side-lit with pink sunlight. The birches are bathed on gold and blue light, casting deep shadows.

"Deep Winter Snow Birches";  is part of a painting series I started a some 20 years ago and continue making today. These 30”x40” horizontal paintings were part of a broader theme I was exploring, of America and the west.   (They were very personal paintings, and tied to a book I wrote, about the American west, and the Mandan tribe, before the arrival of the whites.)

This is a large picture that dominates a room with the power of a blazing gold to pink multicolor sunset. The subject is seductive with its background of bright hues that smoothly transition across the center. The pockets of snow in the crotch of branches are ready to drip the spring melt water, and melt the last of the ice cycles.

"3 Aspens in Pink Light"  is an original painting on canvas of 3 Aspen trees, looking sturdy in the fading light of day. Pockets of snow cling to the tops of the short, snapped-off branches.

The background is a wildly poured mix of yellow and red. Pink light tints the snow. Winter winds push the powdery snow around the base of the trees.

"Rainbow Sunset Birches"

"Rainbow Sunset Birches" ;  is an original painting on canvas of 4 young birch trees, twisted by the winter winds, withstanding the cold, and preparing for the spring melt.

The image started in search of itself. It began with poured paint running across the canvas. Only then did a reason to be come into sight. That poured pigment is perfect as orangish winter light in the clouds as dust starts to fall.

These 16” x 20” paintings were small sized, for me, at the time. I had just wound down a series of much larger pictures.  (They were about the American west, before the arrival of the whites.)

But for this series of winter scenes, the small size was a result of a shoulder injury that prevented any big movements of my painting arm.

As to the subject matter, I have always been fascinated by the winter. The blanket of white that covers everything is so inviting, and clean. Pure and beautiful in its simplicity.

But the flip side is that winter can be suddenly very dangerous if you’re caught out at night. So it has a push-pull appeal to me and my eye.

Thanks for your time and consideration.    -Mark Lindquist ;  is an original painting on canvas of a hummingbird arcing up and away from the spray of the mud puddle below.

"Hummer Avoiding Mud" is part of a painting series I started a some 10 years ago and continue today. These 16” x 20” paintings were small sized, for me, at the time. I had just wound down a series of much larger pictures.  (They were about the American west, before the arrival of the whites.  That theme is another very different story, and some day I’ll put those pictures up for sale.)

But for this series, the small size was a result of a shoulder injury that prevented any big movements of my painting arm.

As to the subject matter, I have always been fascinated by the hummingbird; its unique wing wave pattern (more like a helicopter doing a figure-8, than typical birds, that flap up and down), their coloring, the whirring sound they make.  There’s something magic about them, and their beauty is irresistible to the painter in search of beauty an strength.
