"Hummer Touching Water"

from $40.00

"Hummer Touching Water" ; is of a gentle, softly colored painting of a hummingbird positioned over water, about to dip and take a drink. Its wings whir in a blur of energy. The gentle colors of blue-green waters surround the bird. The reflected light whiten its belly.

"Hummer Touching Water" is part of a painting series I started a some years ago. These 16” x 20” paintings were small sized, for me. I had just wound down a series of much larger pictures, that were about the American west, before the arrival of the whites.(That theme is another very different story, and some day I’ll put those pictures up for sale.)

But for this series, the small size was a result of a shoulder injury that prevented any big movements in my left arm, my painting arm.

As to the subject matter, I have always been fascinated by the hummingbird; its unique wing wave pattern (more like a helicopter doing a figure-8, than typical birds, that flap up and down), their coloring, the whirring sound they make. There’s something magic about them.

An original oil, acrylic and pearlescent painting; varnished, on stretched canvas, 16” x 20”, wired and ready to hang. Unframed.
