"Rainbow Hummer" is from a painting series I started a some years ago, and still continues. At the time, these 20×24” paintings were small sized for me.I had just wound down a series of much larger pictures, that were about the American west.(That theme is another story, and some day I’ll put those pictures up for sale).
But for this series, the small size was a result of a shoulder injury that prevented any movement in my left arm, my painting arm.
For "Rainbow Hummer" the picture started with a poured surface as a background. Turning the flow direction upright gave license to paint a hummingbird rising, as if pushed by the background winds.
The “Rainbow” is the iridescent band of color across its belly. As to the subject matter, I have always been fascinated by the hummingbird; its unique wing wave pattern (more like a rotary helicopter doing a figure-8,than typical birds, flapping up and down), their coloring, the sound they make, their diet (sugar water). Some years into Covid these pictures felt like a desire for freedom during lockdown.
An original oil, acrylic and pearlescent painting, on stretched canvas, 20”x24”, wired and ready to hang. Unframed.
